What are the damages I can get if a debt collector violates the law?

The law allows you to recover actual damages plus up to $1,000 in extra damages.  The law also allows you to recover your attorneys’ fees and costs, which means that law firms like ours can take on your case and recover our fees when we win or settle the case.  Most of our FDCPA clients don’t pay a penny out of pocket.  In addition to these damages, our firm usually negotiates the complete release of the debt when dealing with debt collectors (they might have bought the debt for pennies on the dollar anyway), and sometimes even credit correction.  There are no guarantees in life, but this area of the law we regularly practice within, so we would love to hear from you.

We also defend people being sued by debt collectors. If you are being sued for an old credit card or medical debt, call us for a consultation today. Doucet & Associates can be reached at (614) 944-5219 or by scheduling using our online tool.

Debt collectors we sue.

There are some major debt buyers in the country that buy billions of dollars of bad debt for pennies on the dollar.  We sue them all.  If they buy a debt and try to sue a person in Ohio, we are happy to review that case for defense and possible counterclaim.  Even if the amount they claim due is $50, we may be able to help.  In our experience, the major debt buyers rarely have any of their documents in order and can rarely produce verification of the debt.  The major debt related companies in the US include:
